Maths

Year 5 Maths – Summer 2

In the final half of the Year 5 maths curriculum, children continue to strengthen their understanding of number and measurement through work with decimals, negative numbers and volume.

Decimals

Children build confidence when working with decimals and learn how decimals relate to fractions and place value. They will:

  • Read, write and compare decimals with up to 3 decimal places
  • Understand the value of digits in decimal numbers
  • Round decimals to the nearest whole number
  • Add and subtract decimals within the same number of decimal places
  • Solve problems involving decimals in real-life contexts
  • Recognise equivalent fractions and decimals

This unit helps children develop fluency with number and prepares them for more advanced calculation and problem-solving in Year 6.

Negative Numbers

In this unit, children are introduced to negative numbers and learn how they are used in everyday situations such as temperature and counting below zero.

Children will:

  • Count forwards and backwards through zero
  • Read and write negative numbers
  • Compare and order negative and positive numbers
  • Use number lines to represent negative numbers
  • Solve simple problems involving negative numbers in context

This learning develops children’s understanding of number systems and prepares them for future work with integers.

Converting Units

Children apply their understanding of measurement by converting between different units of measure. They will:

  • Convert between metric units of length, mass and capacity
  • Convert between smaller and larger units
  • Use decimal notation when converting measurements
  • Solve measurement problems involving units and calculations
  • Apply their knowledge in practical and real-life contexts

This unit helps children build accuracy and confidence when working with measurements across the curriculum.

Volume

In this final unit, children are introduced to volume and capacity in more depth. They will:

  • Estimate and compare volume and capacity
  • Measure and calculate volume using cubes
  • Understand cubic units
  • Solve problems involving volume and capacity
  • Use mathematical language to describe and compare measurements

This unit develops spatial reasoning and prepares children for more advanced measurement work in Year 6.
